Synthon announces tentative approval of generic Amlodipine-Valsartan tablets

Synthon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Synthon) is announcing today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted tentative approval for the company’s Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) of the fixed dose combination Amlodipine-Valsartan.

Synthon had filed an ANDA with a Paragraph IV certification for a generic equivalent of Exforge®. As a result, Synthon expects to be eligible for 180 days of Hatch-Waxman exclusivity for at least one of the strengths upon the first commercial marketing of their generic product.
Upon final approval, Synthon’s generic Amlodipine-Valsartan will be the AB-rated generic equivalent of Novartis’ Exforge®. Exforge® is combining the active ingredients of an angiotensin receptor blocker - Diovan® (valsartan) - and a calcium channel blocker - Norvasc® (amlodipine) - with the convenience of a single, once-daily tablet. The product was launched in the U.S. by Novartis in June of 2007.

The brand product had annual sales of approximately $ 263 million in the United States, based on IMS Midas sales data.
