The Synthon corporate EHS organization consists of 14 employees of which two are based in the Netherlands. As Occupational toxicology/hygiene officer you will work with the Director Corporate EHS and our local affiliates and customers to ensure that they receive high quality hazard and risk information on our products. The primary scope is worker related safety but product safety is also an important aspect. The role focuses on supplying stakeholders with occupational exposure limits, compound classifications in line with EU legislation (e.g. REACH & CLP), compilation of regulatory documents (e.g. safety data sheets) and assessment of potential consequences should incidents with hazardous materials occur. The position is ideal for those seeking a position in applied (occupational) toxicology and having an affinity for occupational hygiene.

You are keen on finding the best literature available and combine it with in silico analysis and professional expertise. You like to translate available data into hazard & risk assessments to be used in regulatory documents and for internal and external advice.  

With the further development of the corporate EHS department the Occupational toxicology/hygiene officer can expand the activities to include aspects in the field of occupational hygiene or environmental risk assessments as well. EHS-related non-clinical testing is a rare activity and, should it be needed, is to be performed by contract research organizations.

Job mission

To supply Synthon and its clients with the hazard and risk information that they need in a concise, reliable yet also pragmatic manner while adhering to relevant legislation and procedures. Most important part of the job is the initiation and updating of entries in the base package of (corporate) EHS information (OEL, OEB, SDS, PDE etcetera) and responding to questions and requests related to it. Working on continuous improvement of our output is an inherent aspect of the activities.  

Job details

  • Create, update and improve regulatory documents such as safety data sheets, occupational exposure limit (OEL) of permitted daily exposure (PDE) determination reports.
  • Analyse and communicate the hazardous properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates and other chemicals to support the establishment of safe working conditions at our production sites.
  • Respond to queries that may result in exposure to hazardous substances of Synthon or external employees.
  • Support logistics departments on transport related hazardous substance issues.
  • Support local colleagues on questions that they may have related to hazardous substances.
  • Support containment strategies and equipment selection by providing toxicological input into the overall risk assessment process.

Your profile

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Toxicology or relevant study with emphasis on toxicology 
  • 0 - 5 years of experience with working in an applied scientific (level) position aimed at hazardous substances, preferably in a (pharmaceutical) industry or consultancy setting.
  • Toxicologist with an affinity for occupational hygiene or occupational hygienist with a proven experience in toxicology.
  • Registered toxicologist or willing to become one.
  • Knowledge of and experience with hazardous substances related EU-legislation (EU-CLP, REACH) is a plus.
  • A high proficiency in English both in writing and speaking

You are not afraid to make the necessary decisions along the way (even if little data is available) and thereby influence choices made by (internal) clients as related to worker and relevant areas of patient safety.
